Early 1870's Dress with Black Velvet Appliques

A stunning 1860’s purple and pink stripe changeable silk dress that has recently been de-accessioned from a major New York City museum. The cataloging tag is attached to the dress. The shimmering fabric has a dark purple under tone. The bodice is lavishly trimmed with black velvet ribbon and tabs that are outlined with black lace and beading. The front waist is trimmed with wide tabs that are each trimmed with velvet and lace. The dress has a center back peplum that is trimmed in the same manner. The dress is fully lined with cotton and has a front button closure. The dress is in very good condition. There is no underarm discoloration and no splits in the fabric. There is discoloration at the bend of each elbow. A stunning display dress. Bust 32 Waist 26 Skirt length 43.

The fashion plate below is from 1872. My guess is this dress was made right bout then.
