This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1941 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. If you have antique clothing in your collection, please, email me pictures of them and I will gladly add them to this site.

Regency Era Stays
From the seller:
Early Bodice from Central Europe
Late 18th early 19th century
Central Europe - Bohemia (?)
Amazing fully boned semi-rigid body with the inscription "24491 pure and in Prague 18.. Deep brown Damask, whale's baleen whale (?) and piped edge of kid skin cream. Partially covered with Brocade with Gold Ribbon. Lacing on the front eyelets and transverse bracket using two buttons. Cream linen lining. Very good condition of conservation.
Dimensions: height 25 cm, height 34 cm, bust 83 cm behind front.
Positive points:
Very beautiful piece of the civil suit by the end of the 18th century and in good condition considering its age. Structure and impeccable condition!
Negative Points:
A slight patina is present. The lining is dusty and has small spots by location. Otherwise good condition no hole or accident!

From Me:
There is a lot going for the 18th century date besides the shape. Yes, this is a folk bodice style - however, there is the fabric. The trim is nearly sterotypical for the 18th century. You can see a similar but wider one on this men's outfit at the Kyoto Costume Institute and a similar one fore sale here. The style of trim also shows up here in this painting, this painting shows scalloped edges<\a>, this is a redone pillow made with 18th century fabric and trims, more scalloped gold trim, and here. Actually, this style gold trim on vestments is very, very popular in the 18th century.
The fabric too is very 18th century. I wish I could remember the museum I was at where I saw a similar print to this but in green. It was in the past few months which means it was either somewhere in DC or in NYC.... If anyone finds it, let me know.
The back tabs are done in a different fabric, meaning they would have been hidden - again, very 1790's. Also, it looks like a museum previously dated this to the 18th century based on the writing on the inside... So, 1790's it is!

Late 18th Century Printed Cape
From the seller:
This short cape is a rare item of costume, and is made up of various typically Provencal cottons - a mixture of muted violet and indigo. It dates to the end of the 1700s.
It has a large, and delightfully frilled hood, and there is also frilling around the edge of the main body of the cape. The hood is lined with thin flannel, and the whole is tightly gathered into a central point at the middle back.
The cape is designed with pretty sprigged cotton and is lined with indigo cotton. The inside brim of the hood is in a cotton with a scrolling purple design.
It has original ties to the front in cotton of a different print.
The condition is remarkable for it's great age, and the cape is intact and all hand worked ofcourse.
This is a beautiful item when properly arranged on a suitable mannequin. It looks delightfully elegant and feminine. Combined with a cotton skirt or gown, some antique lace at the throat or a lace cap, it would reflect the style of the times.
Measurements: From neck to V back base 24". Laid flat and measured at widest point: 52"
From Me:
This style was actually really popular in the late 18th century/early 19th century. Here are some other examples:
- Women's Cape, 1785-1820
- Women's Cape, 1780's
- About half way down this page you'll find another printed 18th century cape
There are a lot more out there as well. Based on the shape and the pattern of the fabric, I'm thinking 1790's for this.

Late 18th Century Men's Waistcoat
From the seller:
A early gentleman' silk waistcoat with Beauvais embroidery.
Item Measurements:
Item condition:
In mainly good strong condition, there is one 2" tear at side of vest..otherwise age related spots.spots on inner lining..All items we list need to be cleaned.
From Me:
No measurements, unfortunately, with this one. It's similar in overall shape to this once at LACMA. The collar, the length, and the straight bottom edge are all very similar. This waistcoat is most likely from the earlier part of the 1790's.
Late 18th Century/Early 19th Century Men's Fringed Silk Waistcoat
From the seller:
Circa late 1700-early 1800, a man's cream silk waistcoat with embroidery. Colors and embroidery are very nice with fine floral and leaf sprays.
Item Measurements:
22" down the front..10 1/2" across front silk panel on each side.
Item condition:
In mainly good strong condition, but there are scattered breaks in the silk, buttons have some silk but embroidery has wear. All items we list need to be cleaned.
From Me:
My guess is late 1790's based on the cut and the embroidery detail (Scarlet Pimpernel anyone?).
An earlier style waistcoat with fringed silk
Another earlier styled fringed silk waistcoat
Overall, the fringed silk is pretty rare. I'm surprised to see this one up on ebay.
