Early 20th Century Pink Petticoat

From the seller:

This is a darling pink cotton Edwardian petticoat. Insert lace is set in criss-crossing, diagonal designs, framing graceful, hand embroidered panels. The edges are shaped, also trimmed with lace edging.
There is a ruffle underneath the flounce, with fabric covered buttons all the way around at the top, right underneath what I always thought was a horizontal slot for a ribbon to be threaded through. You can see these in the 3rd pic.
Not sure what would have been attached here, perhaps something that was supposed to be threaded through the slots and held on with the button.
Anyway, it's 26 1/2" at the waist, 32" long.
In good condition. The button is missing in back, there are a couple of brownish spots, a 1/4" L-shaped tear, you should be able to see this in the pic. There is also a tear to the placket that holds the hook and eye, not visible, of course, when the petticoat is buttoned.
There is a 3 1/2" seam separation to the plain section, near the top of the waist. There are a couple of 1" seam separations where the lace is pulling away from the fabric. There is one 3" tear to the fabric, two other, 1/2" holes next to it, along the bottom edge right above the lace ruffle. There are two other half inch stressed areas to the fabric near the hem, a 2" area where there is some lace missing, also along the edge. There is a line of fading to the pink where it looks as if a tuck was taken down.
International bidders please be aware that any VAT, delivery, or customs charges are not part of the item price of my own shipping charges. Please contact your local post or customs office if you have about these charges.

From Me:

This could be either Edwardian or Teen's era. The neat thing about this is it appears that the buttons might have been used to hold a dress in place. Layers were all the rage in the late Edwardian/early teens with the ruffles of the petticoat peaking out beneath the dresses.
1913 Fashion Plate

Although the above are evening gowns, the day dresses weren't that dissimilar in the idea of shorter overdresses with an underskirt peaking out. The buttons could keep the shorter overdress in place without it riding it up.

Early Victorian Quilted Petticoat

From the seller:

Excellent condition to this white cotton quilted petticoat. The designs are well executed, the cotton is crisp and strong.
The waistband has been professionally replaced, is 100% cotton, and was attached by hand, with evenly spaced gathers all the way around the waist, it fastens with two antique milk glass buttons in back.
The quilting goes all the way up to the waist, with the more complicated designs starting at about the hip area, plainer, horizontal stitches just below the waist.
All the sewing is hand. It measures 27 1/4" around at the waist, it's 35 1/4" long, including the crochet.
There is one side seam which seems to be original, as does the crochet edging.
There are one or two light spots, some light storage discoloration. The fabric is crisp and strong, there are no holes, thin, or weak areas. 1830's-50's, with the waistband about 20 years old.

From Me:

This just looks painful to me. Not to wear, but to do all that sewing by hand. :-)  It reminds me of this blue petticoat at the MET.

Late Victorian and Late Edwardian Undergarments!

From the seller:

Slip #1 (left in photo)-Victorian, waist-24", bust-40", skirt-39" long, double lace flounce measures 17" wide, 3-button back with 3 hook and eye, 7 gore skirt adds fullness to skirt without added bulk, the front and sides of skirt are not gathered, back of skirt is softly gathered, bodice is very full at bust with a scoop neckline and shoulder bands would sit lower on the shoulder or upper arm
Slip #2 (right in photo)-Edwardian, empire waist-26", bust-40", hips-44", skirt from empire waist to hem-40" long, flounce measures 14" wide, 3 hook and eye back closure, broderie anglaise lace bodice and flounce, square neckline

From Me:

The one thing I have trouble with is making pretty undergarments for my gowns. This is why I love the second petticoat slip so much! Look, she used the petticoat hemming to make the bodice! And then left over lace for the straps! So easy and yet so lovely.

The Victorian one is very much 1890's (all that lace!). The Edwardian one is late Edwardian going into early Teens era.

Early Bustle Era Petticoat

From the seller:

WONDERFUL 1860 CIVIL WAR VOLUMINOUS PETTICOAT WITH PIN TUCKS + LONG BACK TRAIN

Voluminous 1860's Civil War period ladies cotton petticoat with many rows of pin tucks. Machine sewn.

Wonderful long train. Written in Indian ink is the original 1860's owner's name.

The bottom flounce is decorated with rows of pin tucks and gathered ruffles.

Cartilage pleating in rear of petticoat and petticoat has a button closure at back.

Condition very good. With a small tears below waist band, and with few small size storage/age related spots, no repairs. Waist band is not adjustable but has two sewn on strings to adjust. These are not original to petticoat.
Rarely used, Fairly clean, I have not soaked this petticoat. Could use a good soaking to refresh.

MEASUREMENT

Waist 23-1/2", Length in back 63-1/2",

Length in front 41".

A great addition to one's collection.

From Me:

Given the width at the bottom and how badly it needs a bustle to look proper, I'm saying late 1860's/early 1870's and I'm leaning more to the early 1870's.

Victorian Quilted Petticoat

From the seller:

Antique Victorian green Silk Quilted Petticoat. Great condition with some signs of wear as shown in pictures. It is lined with 2

different type of calicos.

Measurements :

Waist: 12 inches laying flat

Waist to hem: 32 1/2 inches

Around bottom hem: 36 inches laying flat

Any questions, please contact me.

From Me:

These quilted petticoats are so hard to date because they were popular for a number of years. Based on the calicos, I think this is from the 1860's. Here is a sampler pack of calicos that have a similar look to the ones inside the petticoat. The sampler pack dates from the 1860's. Another example of cottons circa 1860.

1860's Embroidered Petticoat

From the seller:

A Civil War era 1860’s cotton embroidered petticoat that has been de-accessioned from the Rochester Historical Society Museum collection. The cataloging tag is stitched inside the waist band. The lower part of the petticoat is embroidered with a white figural pattern, intermingled with rows of pin tucking. The waist has tight cartridge pleating and a tie closure back. The petticoat is in very good and sturdy condition. There are a few small age spots but nothing major. Waist 28 Length 40.

From Me:

Lots and lots of pin tucks. At least, by this point, they had a sewing machine to do that! Based on where the pleating is, my guess is more to the middle of the 1860's.

Bustle Era Quilted Petticoat

From the seller:

A beautiful 1890’s ivory satin wedding petticoat that has been de-accessioned from a museum collection. The bottom hemline is padded and quilted. The edge of the hemline has a pleated satin ruffle. The petticoat has a trained back. It is in very good and sturdy condition. There are no splits or holes in the fabric. There are a few small minor age spots. Waist 24 Front length 42 Back length 47.

From Me:

This looks like it's about 10 years older than the seller believes - notice how it really looks like it could use a bustle pad? I'm putting it in the 1880's.
