Ladies Victorian vest

From the seller:

Up for bid is a c1890s taffeta ladies' vest in an iridescent copper with a floral sprigged, polka dotted and navy stripped pattern. There are two rows of iridescent shell buttons -- a decorative row of five and a functional row of four. The bottom button on the functional row is missing and the top popped off during handling and will be sent along to the buyer in a separate envelope.

The edges of the waist are pinked. The underarms and back of the vest are polished brown cotton and the lining has two bones and seven hooks and eyes. The bust is 31", the waist is 22", and the length from the shoulder is 15.25". Aside from the button situation, the vest is in good condition.

I ship worldwide! Feel free to email with any questions. Thank you for looking at my auction and happy bidding!

From Me:

I think this might be earlier but I'm really not sure. You see vests in the Bustle and Natural Form eras:

Both the above are from the 1880's and I think this vest might be even a bit earlier. The button layout is similar to those of the late 1870's/early 1880's.

1780's Men's Waistcoat

From the seller:

DATING TO THE 18TH C

SEWN FULLY BY HAND

FASHIONED OF A SILK GROUND WOVEN WITH SILVER WITH RICH SILVER EMBROIDERY DOWN THE FRONT AND ON THE BOTTOM EDGE AND POCKETS

THE BACKING IS A FULL MORE MODERN REPLACEMENT, AND WAS POORLY DONE, IT IS TOO SMALL AND THE POINTS AT THE HIP NOW CURVE TOWARD THE BACK

THERE IS SOME STAINING UNDER THE ARMS, SOME SPLITTING TO THE FABRIC ATOP THE SHOULDER WITH FRAY ABOVE THE POCKETS AS SEEN

SOLD AS IT WAS FOUND REFLECTIVE OF ITS CONDITION

NOTE THE MEASUREMENTS ARE FOR WHAT THE WAIST IS SUPPOSED TO BE WITH ITS ORIGINAL BACKING

MEASUREMENTS IN INCHES:

CHEST: 40

WAIST: 36

LENGTH: 26

From Me:

The darts at the underarms tripped me up but I think those were added at a later date - when the new backing was added. Probably either late 19th Century or later as it's common for people to have no regard for historical fashion as priceless art. (I swear, if I ever have $$$ I'm going to wear a Monet around my neck to some fancy party just to show how dumb it is to wear antique clothing)

The way the hem is styled and the length of the waistcoat mean this was probably originally made some time in the 1780's.

Early 1890's Men's Suit

From the seller:

Very nice, ribbed wool 3 piece suit consisting of a cutaway jacket, vest, and buckle back pants. The jacket is lined with black cotton sateen, except for the sleeves, which are lined with a blue and white striped cotton. The vest and inside waist of the pants are lined with the same blue and white fabric. The vest is backed with black sateen, the buckle incised "Patent, March 13, 1888".

Both jacket and vest are edged with brown silk twilled tape along the edges and pockets. The pants are lined at the waistband.

The jacket has two self covered fabric buttons, one chest pocket outside, two pockets inside at the chest, two inside pockets at the tails. There is black seam binding and 3 buttons at each sleeve.

The vest has 4 pockets, five self covered fabric buttons, front pockets are lined with velveteen.

The pants have a flared leg, with a stiff cotton band at the inside cuff to reinforce. Buttons are Solide, the buckle in back is also marked Solide. There is a gusset in back, the back pockets are curved, the side pockets also have a slight curve along the edge.

The jacket measures 41" around at the chest, 15 1/2" between the shoulder seams in back, sleeve is 27" long, measured from the top to the wrist. It's 35" long from the collar seam to the bottom edge.

The pants have a 37" waist, 42 " hem, 30" inseam.

The vest has an approximately 1" insert at each side which seems to have been added later, though the fabric matches the backing. It measures 43" around at the chest, is 21" long measured in back.

Please note that these are outside measurements.

The jacket has one button with fraying along the edges, one tiny hole at the back towards the waist, the slightest, 1/2" area with minor fray at one wrist, this is hard to spot. There is some minor discoloration to the sleeve lining.

The vest has some water type or age staining towards the front and back shoulder area, no splits, weak areas, or holes.

The pants have some discoloration to the lining and pockets, a few of the waistband buttons have some paint loss.

A very well made, substantial suit, in just about a good a condition as you will find. There is little or no shininess, fading, or matting to the ribbed fabric.

Hello, could the pants be lengthened? If so, by how much? Thanks! Jul-04-13
A: Hello - Thanks for your interest in the suit. The hem is about 1 1/2", so you would have about an extra inch or so to lengthen, if you allowed about 1/2" for the new hem. Please write again if you have further questions. Best, Sue

From Me:

First, the person that asked that question at the end needs to be re-educated, badly. We do not wear 120+ year old suits, period. Think of clothing as a skin. When you are 120 years old, your skin is quite delicate and very different from when you were born or even middle aged.

Second, I think this is probably a couple of years later than the buckle date. Here is a fashion plate from 1891 showing a very similar jacket cut.

Regency Era Gentlemen's Waistcoat

From the seller:

Item Description

A very fine example of an early 19th Century Gentleman's court waistcoat circa 1800.

Of typical form constructed of fine ivory coloured silk decorated with sprigs and flowers to the front opening, bottom edge and both pocket flaps. There are 6 embroidered false buttons to the front however the waistcoat is fastened using plain buttons concealed beneath the front flap. Stand up collar design with two adjustment straps to the rear. The back panel appears to be a light cotton.

A very fine example with some age related staining originating from the armpit area but these do not detract. No mothing or anything that can really constitute as damage. Please note though this is a garment dating over 200 years old so please expect some minor staining or creasing that may not be visible in the images.

The stock is simply a piece of tied satin material however as this matches the waistcoat well it will be included in the sale. An unusually large sized garment for the period.

Chest Size Measurement: 98cm

From Me:

For my fellow Americans that for the live of them cannot convert from cm into inches in their heads, I had to look it up too. :-D It's roughly 38.5 inches. So, yeah, not a small guy. However, this is just too lovely and too colorful not to be included today. :-)

1870's Bodice Jacket/Vest

From the seller:

This bodice dates to the 1870’s and is fashioned of a wool and silk bengaline with an inner polished cotton lining with all of its edges richly hand embroidered in green floss in a floral and leaf pattern. The rear tail is cut in large bustle form and there are no enclosures in the front as it is meant to be worn in open style. Five eraser sized holes are on the front right shoulder with an eraser sized hole on the rear beneath the neckline and one small break is seen at the left underarm. The piece is sewn by both machine and hand and is in strong wearable condition. Measures 32 inches around the bust, 24 inches around the waist, and 21 inches in its rear length.
Vintage clothing is described to its best and sold as found…and described as accurately as possible. The items HAVE NOT been cleaned and should be cleaned prior to wearing at the discretion of the buyer. Often for proper fit, hang, and wear ability, pieces will need to be altered and/or adding a hook or snap here or there, with a seam closure or strengthening needed. Vintage clothing is most often worn previously, and if old stock, often has slight imperfections from storage, a hint of color or odor.

From Me:

Okay so this has a little bit of color but it's still rather bleak looking.

Men's American Civil War Era Vest

From the seller:

Mid 1800s mens waistcoat of silk with raised velvet pile foliage motif, notched shawl collar. Carved shell buttons, leather trim at front bottom...back has been split and enlarged with a piece of flour sack at some point in time. Some wear to inside of collar at nape of neck, a few stitches loose where leather trim attaches to front...no stains or holes, worn under a jacket will be gorgeous!
40" across chest, 32" waist, 22" long

From Me:

My *guess* is about 1860's. I'm not as well versed in Victorian Men's fashions; anyone have a better date?

From Me:

This is the sort of stuff that makes my blood boil. He cut up a wonderful late 18th/early 19th century Coat/Vest (caftan?) and sold it for the parts. This seller is currently doing it again to another piece and has done this in the past. Why take apart what is perfectly fine piece that's not shattered? Yes, this has some repairs but it helps *us* to learn about sewing through the ages. Without those seams, that lining, it's just a wall hanging.
