Late Teen's Era/Early 1920's Nightgown

From Karen!

Hi, I have attached photos of a silk slip/nightgown, never worn, with herringbone embroidery on sleeves, around neckline and down the front, lace insertion, front and back, and lace all around neckline. The front and back are identical, including the embroidery and insertion panel. Not sure of the vintage, perhaps 30's or earlier? It is in mint condition and whisper-soft.

From Me:

Again, thank you, Karen, for sharing your photos. I believe this is from the late 1910's/early 1920's. Here are some examples that have similar aspects to this nightgown.

1910's pattern

The above pattern has similar placement for details. Honestly, add sleeves and round out the neckline and it looks like the same pattern.

The third from the left, second from the right, also has similar placement. The link no longer has the image up - but that's where it's from originally. The fashion plate is from 1919.

From Me:

Based on the overall shape to include the a-line look, the button front, the high neckline- and that v-shape in the back, I believe this to be from the Natural Form era - maybe about 1878/1879.

Natural Form Dressing Gown

From the seller:

Elegant dressing gown of wheat color cotton, embellished with strips of ruching and handmade bobbin lace, with large (about 11 inch) pale green satin bows in the front, and at the sleeves (about 6 inches across).

Estimating the date fairly closely to the early 1870s because of the similar clothing it was found with. Probably custom made by a seamstress for the lady of the house. See my other Ebay listings for drawers, petticoats, etc.

Many fine couture details: Graceful elegant train, with a deep ruffle rucking and handmade bobbin lace added over the fabric of the gown. Buttons about hallways down the front, closed below. Handstitched buttonholes on the front cleverly hidden beneath the handmade bobbin lace edging, which is neatly tacked down between buttonholes to keep it neat. Gathered in the back from the back of the yoke, which consists of strips of ruching and handmade bobbin lace. Bobbin lace ruffle at the neck. Ruching strips and bobbin lace ruffle at the wrists.

Could it possibly have been worn with the matching petticoat and/or drawers (See ebay listings) -- as the lace is so revealing in the front?

Length nape of neck to bottom of train about 55 inches
Length from from front top button to bottom of hem about 50-51 inches
Base of back yoke from arm to arm about 13 inches
Center of armhole base to armhole base about 20 inches
Sleeve from shoulder to bottom of ruffle about 20 inches
Bottom ruffle about 9 inches deep
Insertions of pintucking and lace about 1 1/2 inches wide
Sleeve decoration about 6 inches deep, including insertion alternating strips of ruching about 1 1/2 in wide and bobbin lace of about 1 inch.

Very good condition. Two of the large satin bows are missing, see photo of tiny hole in the front ruching where one is missing. All original buttons, each stitched on with exactly the same thread and same number of stitches.

Probably was put away reasonably clean when originally stored many decades ago, but has the dust of those decades. A few small stains -- one near the hem, a few clustered in the back (see photos) Would need to be washed/cleaned. Has the mellow color of unbleached muslin.

From Me:

I'm thinking more late 1870's but 1870's.

1930's Smock

From the seller:

It is a hand swen old cotton dress. It was laundried and bleached but still have stains and spots. No holes or tears.

Armpit to armpit:22", length: 42". The color is ivory.

Please refer to the pictures for more information.
Thank you for looking and happy bidding!
(Sorry we only ship to USA address)

From Me:

I bought the twin of this shift/smock from this seller and I can confirm - 1930's. Mine even has faded written on it to tell me what feed/flour sack it came from. We tend to have this idea that, once the 1870's hit, everyone began to use the sewing machine and hand sewing was just for those places the sewing machine couldn't get to. That's not really true. Many people were too poor to afford a sewing machine and often too poor to buy clothing from a catalog. You made do with what you had. In the 1930's, that meant using the fabric from the flour sacks or feeds sacks - to the point the companies started to compete by producing pretty prints for the various sacks. My guess, this smock is from the early 1930's - right during the Great Depression and meant for a lady.

From Me:

"Burlesque Depression Flapper"? I...
Um, yeah, okay. This is why keyword spamming is a BAD idea. All I see is some lady from the 1920's with a big fan crying her eyes out...I don't envision this nightgown at all with those keywords.

Anyway, 1930's and probably pretty late in the 30's too.

1920's Bed Gown top

From the seller:

NOTE: This is a vintage item which means that it is more than 30 years old. All vintage/antique items have been worn unless stated otherwise. Please keep this in mind before purchasing. Thank you :)

We are pleased to offer this fabulous tunic circa 1917-1920 inspired by designer Paul Poiret.

FABRIC: The lovely tunic is fashioned from a semi-sheer, soft and wispy silk crepe in a shade of very pale melon green. The entire tunic is hand done with intricate details.

The Tunic:
The top features a flowing silhouette with a deep "V" neckline and 3/4 length caftan/kimono sleeves both decorated with pleated ivory tulle.

The neckline is decorated with a pin-tuck yoke adorned with lovely silk ribbon roses. Each "bow" of the rosette is twisted/knotted in the middle and decorated with yellow floss in the center.

The tunic has long sides with matching ivory hanging tassels. This was perhaps made for the boudoir but it is nice enough to be worn as a blouse.

**Please note that that is shown with tulle knickers which are not part of the blouse or included in this sale. Thank you**

This is in near EXCELLENT and READY TO WEAR condition with the following flaws to note:

1) This has a slight shadow under the arms which will not be noticeable when worn.

2)There is a pinhole at the front and two brown spots close to the flowers. Please see the last photo

From Me:

Not a Poiret. More likely inspired by Boue Soeurs if not one their creations. And yes, it is a pajama top.

This lovely original 1920s silk nightgown is being auctioned "as is", I do not accept returns. From Me:

All I can think about is those pockets. They must have had rolled up handkerchiefs in them at some point. This would be delightful in the summer, when the a/c has gone out, and you are sick....because it has pockets!!!!
