Item description from the seller

This is a very charming 1820s corset. It is not boned, just made of sturdy cotton twill in white and blue creating this beautiful, soft denim-blue. Denim was produced for centuries before "jeans" as we know them began to be produced in the mid-nineteenth century. I won't call this fabric denim BUT it IS a cotton twill in this beautiful blue. Maybe it is an early version. Lined in robust cotton with a tabby weave (canvas?), The corset is wonderfully hand-sewn. The interior side-seams are amazingly beautiful. It is pieced, indicating a resourceful maker. I count 12 pieces of the blue fabric alone. Look closely at the upper back photos to see the piecing. There are 16 bone grommets. The last two photos show the corset laced up- Don't mock my technique. I worked with what I had. The lacing I used is not included.

*Condition: Structurally sturdy with age-related foxing, 4 missing grommets at the bottom. The bottom 2 holes have torn through to the edge. Some wear to the right armhole and shoulder seam. Very suitable for study and display. Not wearable. Look at photos carefully.

* Measurements are provided for display only.  28" chest, 19.75" waist, 28" hip. These are approximate.

*Please ask all questions before bidding- Thank you!

From Me:

1820s stays are pretty distinctive in themselves.  Metal grommets weren't invented until 1828 so bone grommets make perfect sense.  The dye is likely indigo as it was the cash crop at the time.

From Me:

This style was so popular for so long, it's hard to tell when exactly. However, I agree with the seller - most likely late 1820's.

What I find so unique about this one is the back. Rather than a buckle, there are eyelets to use a ribbon to tie it back and make it form fitting. Very cool! And it's probably a lot more doable for many of us to just make eyelets than it is to find a small buckle!

Early Romantic Era White Sheer Dress

From the seller:

RARE c1820's LADY'S WHITE COTTON GOWN ALL HAND STITCHED MUSEUM DE-ACCESSIONED

A most becoming and charming rare American 1820 - 1825 white fine cotton hand stitched one piece gown FOR STUDY. Recently de-accessioned from the Rochester Historical society collection in New York State, and still retaining its original identification museum tag.

The dress waistine has cartilage pleating with short puffed sleeves and the hemline is decorated wide pleats. The neckline and sleeve edge is decorated with valenciennes lace and embroidered trim.

There are 4 baleen whale bone stays.

The bodice has an inner bodice and the skirt is unlined. There is a hook and loop closures at back.

The gown is in very good and sturdy condition. There is no underarm discoloration, and has not been washed. There is one 1/2" inch split on the sleeve's trim, some scattered 1/4" to 1" splits in the fabric on seams under arm, no stains. There are very small holes in skirt. There are small holes can be found in seam back and under arm seams, probably stress rips. There has been alterations to this gown over the decades. Waist has been cut and separated into 2 pieces. Waist band has been added. Seams have been taken in on both sides of waist.

A rare and highly collectible early garment.

Bust 25" Waist 21", Length of sleeves 7", Length of dress from neck line to hemline in front 51", Length of dress from neck line to hemline in back 56". A very attractive early 19th century gown.

The dress is a small size and for display only.

From Me:

I believe this is the latter half of the 1820's based on the bodice ratio to the skirt. Although the sleeves are different the Met has a late 1820's dress with similar bodice treatment to this extant one.

It's the collar that gives away the dating as well as the horizontal stripes.

1820's Cotton Print Dress

From the seller:

This very pretty dress is in a fine cotton gauze printed with a design in yellow and cinnamon. The style of the print is typical for the 1820s -perhaps unusual to our modern ideas, but nevertheless very unusual, and high fashion at the time.

The dress has a slightly elevated waist, pretty shoulder detail and a mass of frills to the lower skirt. It has back closure, and only the bodice is lined with fine cotton.

The sleeves are fairly full in the style of the middle 1820s, but have not yet reached the volume of the later dresses. There are decorative cuffs with button fastening.

The dress is in very good condition. There are very
isolated small holes, which are difficult to see, and really have to be looked for.The fine cotton lining of the bodice is marked all over from wear, and of course there would have been a sash. A very pretty afternoon or dinner dress with unfaded colours.

Measurements: Length 53". Across shoulders 16"
