This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1941 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. If you have antique clothing in your collection, please, email me pictures of them and I will gladly add them to this site.

Late 1890's Spring Walking Dress
From the seller:
For your consideration today, we have a Victorian bustle dress that screams gay 1890's. this two piece set is made of a floral fabric that looks like violas. The top has stays sewn into the fabric. It has long sleeves with green trim at the cuffs, that is the same green that lines the sides of the bodice. In the center is a gathered cream colored fabric, with the floral fabric that goes around the neck, with a bow closure in the back. The tops of the sleeves have a big puff on the shoulder. It is fully lined. The skirt buttons at the waist and is gathered in the back to accommodate the bustle, and is fully lined. This set displays nicely but does have some condition issues. The fabric is probably cotton and although it is strong, it has soiling, spots, and scattered insect damage. The cream fabric on the sleeves and center of the bodice have insect damage also. The skirt has a spill spot in the front, and the insects have eaten away some of this area that you can see in the pictures. There are hooks and eyes missing here and there. The dress needs to be cleaned. All in all, even with the flaws, this is a nice looking set.
Measurements with the dress laid flat are:
TOP
ARMPIT TO ARMPIT--16"
SHOULDER TO HEM--15"
WAIST--11.5"
SKIRT
WAIST--11.5"
WAIST TO HEM--40.25"
From Me:
This is very Turn of the Century. My guess is about 1898 or so.

Featured is a pale pink women's dress from the early Edwardian period. The tonal asian style embroidery is done in lavender and green. Great bold accents with the decorative carved black buttons. Slightly puffed and darted sleeves. Shaped skirt with gores and pleated panels. Unlined and fastens with hooks and eyes in back.
Condition: suitable for pattern making/costume/project. General fading, light soiling, age speckling throughout. Seems to be natural fiber fabric, so many issues could be resolved if it were dyed. Please refer to all photos and ask us any questions before purchasing, thank you.

Thank you! Vintage a la Mode 415.440.1544
From Me:
Dearest Seller,
Never, ever put your phone number in a listing. Ever.
Anyway, I see nothing "Asian style" about the embroidery - it looks like normal late Victorian/early Edwardian machine embroidery to me. I do like the two tone embroidery. I think the dress may have started out life in the 1890's and was restyled well in the early 1900's based on the sleeves. I think those pin tucks are hiding a seam.
1880's Brown Bustle Dress
From the seller:
A sublime 1880’s dark bottle green satin brocade and copper satin bustle dress. The polonaise styled bodice has a long front and back drapery. The drapery is trimmed with black silk fringe. The bodice is lined with cotton and has a front button closure. The skirt front is made of copper satin and is decorated with ruching. The back of the skirt is made of bottle green satin brocade. The brocade fabric has a floral pattern. The skirt is lined with cotton. The dress is in very good and sturdy condition. The lining in the bodice is splitting but the outer fabric is sturdy. There are circles of underarm discoloration on the lining that does not show on the satin fabric. Bust 32 Waist 23 Skirt length 38.
From Me:
You know, I have some brown brocade I was thinking of making another 1510's Venetian gown out of but now I think it might go bustle....
Interesting 1870's Bustle Era Green Dress
From the seller:
An elegant 1880’s green silk bustle tunic styled bodice with a long train. The bodice has recently been de-accessioned from a museum collection. The cataloging tag is stitched inside the bodice. The bodice has a front insert made of ivory silk with an attached green silk belt. The back extends into a long train. The bodice is fully lined with cotton and buckram. The lining has a front hook and eye closure and the ivory silk fabric hooks to the side. The bodice is in very good and sturdy condition. There is no discoloration just shadows created by the camera flash. There are no splits or holes. There is light underarm discoloration under one arm and a few scattered small pea size age spots and one dime size. There are missing hooks and eyes on the front silk insert. Bust 34 Waist 28 Front skirt length 40 Back length 51.
From Me:
The sleeves still have that odd 1860's thing going on and the open neckline tend to indicate an earlier date. I'd love to see this paired with one of those ruched up and gathered cream silk bustle skirts.
