This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1941 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. If you have antique clothing in your collection, please, email me pictures of them and I will gladly add them to this site.

1890's Green Bodice
From the seller:
Wonderful Antique Victorian Jacket, appears to be Victorian or Edwardian. It is lined with a corset type bodice with stays, one hook and five buttons. The jacket is trimmed in luxurious black lace measuring 4" wide and 32" long. Lovely fabric, but unsure exactly what it is.
The jacket is in Good Vintage Condition. The inside lining has come apart along one seam near the buttons, the back of one sleeve has been repaired in two spots as shown in the photo, plus another spot at the top of the other sleeve and there is a small tear on the back which has been repaired. The lace has a couple of tears and there are a few pin holes in the jacket fabric. The jacket is over 100 years old and wear is to be expected. Please see photos and contact seller if you have any questions. More photos available.
Measurements taken with the garment laid flat.
Waist: approx. 14"
Bust: approx. 32" - 33"
Length from top of neck to hem approx. 17"
Sleeves measure approx. 26"

Edwardian Dress in Silver and Black
From the seller:
A stunning Belle Epoch 1895 silver and black print silk dress. The fabric has a changeable quality depending on the light reflection. The bodice has full leg of mutton style sleeves. The bodice front has a black lace and black silk insert. The front and back of the bodice are trimmed with black floral lace. The bodice is lined with cotton and has a front hook and eye closure. The skirt hemline is trimmed with a wide ruffle and black floral trim. It has a long back sweep. The skirt is lined with cotton. The dress is in very good condition. There is no underarm discoloration and no age marks. There is a small area on the side of the skirt near the lace trim that has some fraying. An attractive display dress. Bust 32 Waist 26 ½ Front skirt length 41 Back length 49 ½.
From Me:

The style of the dress is consistent with the styles of the mid 1900's, not the mid 1890's, as shown by the fashion plate above.
Pretty Purple Mid to Late 1860's Dress
From the sellers:
Here we are offering a lovely mid 1860’s one piece lilac colored dress made from a silk/wool blend with an iridescent quality. This dress is a combination of both machine and hand sewing, typical of many from the period. It features self fabric trim gathered at the cuffs and above the hem and finished with a band of purple silk ribbon. Self fabric piping is found at the collar, armsyces and waist. Tan polished cotton lines both the bodice and skirt. Closure is down the center front using 8 cloth covered buttons; one is now missing and the others are in fragile condition. I would rate the overall condition of the rest of dress as fair to good. There are a few splits in the skirt but nothing bad. There are several repairs a the edge of the hem that each measure about 3 inches long. There is a long separation at the back of the neck and some wear on the sleeves in several spots. The biggest issue however is the underarm areas; both have considerable splitting as can be seen in our photos. Under the ruffle above the hem there is 12 inches of dress fabric which could be carefully removed and used to make repairs if the new owner desired to do so; when displayed it would be covered by the ruffle so would not be seen. Despite its issues, it still displays nicely and makes a nice study piece as well as it shows no alterations. We provide the following measurements for reference purposes only as we do not sell it as wearable. Bust 32, Waist 24, Front Length 51, Back Length 56 and Hem Circumference 112.

I'm having Easter egg flashbacks just looking at the color of this dress....

For my 1300th Post, a lovely Regency Era Apron Front Dress!
From the seller:
A very rare 1795-1805 white cotton fall front dress. The dress is all hand stitched. The front bodice fits to just under the bust line and the fall front skirt ties to the back and would have been pinned in place on the sides. The bodice has a front Dorset button closure. The bodice is lined with a separate linen closure. The collar and sleeve cuffs are trimmed with ruffles. The skirt front is trimmed with decorative Dorset buttons. Several of the buttons are missing. The skirt is unlined. The dress is in very good condition. There are a couple of pencil tip size holes and a couple of small pea size age spots on the hemline. There is an area on the side of the skirt that has some barely visible pale gray age discoloration. This is an adult’s dress but very small in size. A highly collectible dress as this style is rarely seen on the open market. Bust 27 Empire waist 25 Sleeve length 27 Skirt length 43.
From Me:
And from one of my dearly beloved readers of this blog (and a couple of my other ones too! ;-) ):

It's not exactly the same but it does help to date this as I thought it was somewhere around the 1802 date - and it looks like it is! I personally LOVE wearing apron front Regency dresses. They look so cute on!
Edwardian White Dress
From the seller:
An antique Victorian Circa 1890-1900s era wedding dress with pretty French net tambour lace at neck, silky bows and more.
A pretty example that comes from the estate of Marion Post. Scroll down to bottom to read history of this family.
The blouse measures from shoulder to bottom edge 19 inches, bust 36 inches and sleeves 18 inches.
Skirt measures waist to bottom edge front 42 inches and back 52 inches. Waist around about 25 inches.
A cream color.
There's some age spotting and small holes in places. There's spotting under armpits and some small holes. The lining in the skirt is worn and fragile.
I love the pretty French knots, lace trims and silk bows.
This dress was given to Marion as part of her wedding gifts from other family members and passed down to her.
History of the Post - Peters family and her wedding in 1926:
On July 10th, 1926, Miss Marion Hood Post, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William Stone Post of 150 East Fifty Second Street, New York City, married Thomas Mclure Peters son of Mr. & Mrs. William Richmond Peters, also of New York.
Mr. William Peters built the family Hawirt house in Oyster Bay, Long Island. One of the old time famous mansions in Long Island and is still standing today.
Marion came from a Aristocrat family. She was the granddaughter of the late George B Post, one of the most prominent architects of his day. On the maternal side she is a granddaughter of the late General John Bell Hood of the Confederate Army. She's also niece of George B. Post and Allison Wright Post. If you goggle the name you will find out a vast amount of information about the Post family.
I wondered if there's any relation to the famous CW Post family, cereal makers and built CW Post college in Long Island.
From Me:
- White does NOT equal "wedding".
- This dress is really only from about 18 years before the wedding; circa 1908.
