Late Edwardian Black Lace Dress

From the seller:

ANTIQUE VICTORIAN BALL GOWN
Label: Mon Rouyer...16 Rue Caumartin Paris

Description:

•Stunning in it's day, this 2pc Victorian ball gown was made in Paris in the late 1890s
•It has a pouter pigeon bodice
•Mostly hand stitched with only the skirt seams machine stitched
•The outer layer is black tulle with dots, decorated with velvet ribbons, lace and beaded and sequin medallions
•Pale aqua silk is across the bottom of the bodice and covered with black velvet ribbons and bows in the center
•The bottom of the sleeves are the thinnest and most delicate pleated organza
•Lined in ivory silk with stays and heavy duty metal hooks and eyes down the center back
•The skirt also has the tulle with decorations as the bodice
•Underneath is a layer of the organza that is shirred around the bottom
•The final layer is the ivory silk with the most amazing hem...It's corded and has rosettes all around the bottom
•It is longer in the back and has a piece of the ivory silk sewn on one side seam, maybe to hold a bustle?

Condition:

•The silk fabrics have shattered all over and need to be replaced to make wearable
•More obvious is the ivory silk and every time I touch it, it shatters more and leaves tiny pieces on the floor
•The organza is shattered in places, but not bad enough to have to replace
•The tulle and velvet are in very good condition
•A talented seamstress can restore it to wear, or use this for fabric or pattern study

Measurements:

These measurements are taken flat with a flexible measuring tape...You have to be smaller than the measurements to allow room for ease:
•There is no size tag, fits an extra-small
•Shoulder to shoulder: 15 inches
•Sleeve length: 16 inches
•Armseye: 15 inches around
•Bust: 34 inches
•Waist bodice and skirt: 22 inches
•Hip: full
•Length front skirt: 44 inches

This is one of several vintage and antique dresses I have on separate auctions...Please click on the My Auction Gallery button below to see the others...I will gladly combine to save on shipping charges.

Remember, vintage is NOT new...This is previously worn and will show minor wear...I have inspected and mentioned any noticeable or detracting flaws, noting whether this garment is wearable or not...If not, it can still be appreciated and used for fabric, pattern or construction study...This is sold As Found...Repairing flaws, cleaning, spot removal and pressing is the responsibility of the buyer, as I don't want to damage the garment.

From Me:

*grabby hands*

Given the sleeves (puffy) but the high waist line, I'm thinking 1908.

  1. Just catching up with your blog... This is one of my favorite dresses I've ever seen posted here! I love that striped belt on the bodice. It's such a shame to see these beautiful dresses falling apart because they were made with that damned weighted silk.

    1. LOL! Thanks! In a way, I like that the silk is shattering - only because it forces the sellers to take more detailed photos to show the damage and thereby take close up photos of the construction. :-)
