Lovely Black Silk Corsage with Calico Print Lining

From the seller:

Up for auction is this Antique Victorian Edwardian Black Satin Corset accented with black glass beads, (one bead appears to be missing). Inside is lined with a beige colored material with a flower design. Corset is in nice condition with exception of some loose stitching near beads and on inside lining in a few areas. There is also one eyelet torn and one metal support is missing, (all other metal supports are inside lining throughout corset. The other eyelets appear to be usable. There is a thin double row of black satin over inside lining which appears to be added and upper inside trimming ineeds to be replaced. Everything else appears to be original. All metal supports are intact with exception of one missing on outside edge near side where eyelet is torn. Corset measures 25" long in center when opened up. Measures 12" across center when closed. Comes from a smoke free and pet free home, (no oders). Outside black satin material is in nice condition with no stains. Very wearable Corset. Please see photos for extended description. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask before bidding. Thanks for looking.

From Me:

I know many of you are probably thinking "What the heck is a corsage? That's a Swiss Waist!" I've written a blog entry on my other blog all about how it was never, ever called a Swiss Waist in period and was instead called a corsage. Either way, it's not a corset.

Some things I love about this corsage? The lining! I love seeing the printed calicos or anything that isn't your run of the mill brown cotton or plain linen lining. I wonder if this was scraps or if it was just pieces of an older outfit. Also, I love that the handsewn eyelets have popped. I have done this so many times and I'm glad to see that, if nothing else, it's period for the 1860's.

  1. Awesome! I just shared your post on the "swiss waist" vs corsage on my Facebook page. Love adding new "correct" things to my brain bank.

    1. Cool! I've written a couple of pieces on incorrect terminology commonly used regarding Civil War pieces of clothing. The other is on the Garibaldi Blouse since far to many use that incorrectly as well. I'll also be posting something in the next month or so on Late Victorian/Early Edwardian bathing suits since I've found a couple of myths in that as well.
