Mid 1860's Colorful Print Dress







From the seller:

A charming 1860’s multi- colored stripe cotton print dress. The dress was originally worn by Maria Catherine Blauvelt Ramsey. She was born on March 19 1823 and died on Dec. 12 1902. She was buried in Union Cemetery in Ramsey, N. J. The fabric has a tan, brown and teal blue stripe pattern. The neck, yoke, and armscyes are piped. The bodice is lined with cotton and the skirt is unlined. The bodice lining had hook and eye closure but these have been removed. Some modern snaps have been added but can easily be removed. The dress is in very good condition. There is some mild underarm discoloration, mostly to the inside lining, a 5 inch period mend on the edge of the hemline and some wear to the piping around the neckline. Bust 34 Waist 29 Skirt length 40 Width at hemline 130.

Although the fashion plate above is the "fashionable" version of the dress, you can see the similar cut of the sleeves, neckline, and waistline placement.

    Okay, I haven't said much on here (though I love your postings) but this has to be the most stunningly ugly dress/ fabric I've seen yet! I would wear the fabric, in something much less froofy, but OMG, that combination. Sometimes I wonder if those people were so much into conspicuous consumption, had abso-fricken'-lutely no taste, or were just,...I don't know what. Maybe this was someone who was newly wealthy and frankly vulgar?

      I'll put it this way - the 1970's weren't the first time that everyone decided that tangerine orange goes perfectly with army green. Actually, it's sort of interesting - about a couple of times every century (going back to the middle ages), there will be a decade when hideous colors become popular. I think it's really that all those colors we think look terrible together here are the same colors that look brilliant on trees in the fall. ;-)

    Yeah, I do remember the 60's/70's very well, and and my closet had a few very ugly things! Maybe it's because I have a rather quieter taste that it just gets to me. Actually, let's call it a more educated taste now in colors. Even back then, the most garish I got was an A-line tent minidress( with an orange print Oh, to have that figure again!). And I could only stand to wear it once.
