Cute Orange Bodice Turn of the Century

A gorgeous, showy jacket from the 1890's! This item is just stunning!

The jacket (also known as a "bodice jacket") was made in the Pouter Pigeon style. This style was popular during the late 19th century. It emphasized the woman's bust w/an unbroken curve from the base of the throat to the waist (much like the puffed chest of a pigeon!). This curve was achieved thru the cut of the garments & ruffled camisols.

The jacket is made of silk in a magnificent shade of flame orange. The fabric is iridescent & shimmers w/a golden brown shade. Very unusual color. High collar (detachable), fitted at the waist. Huge, puffed sleeves. The jacket is trimmed w/narrow strips of black velvet ribbon on the collar, cuffs, front & back. Fastens in front w/a row of hidden hooks & eyes.

The interior of the jacket is also interesting - fully lined - including the sleeves - w/light brown cotton. The lining also fastens in front w/a row of brass hooks & eyes. There are 8 stays stitched inside the lining.

The jacket was homemade & shows both machine & hand stitching.

Size - medium. Actual measurements -bust 36, waist 30, length 17, shoulder-to-shoulder 15, sleeve 23.

Condition - considering the fact that this jacket is 120 years old, the condition is very good. I saw a few small, light, scattered spots. SOme of the velvet ribbon trim has loose threads along the edges. 2 of the styas have poked thru the fabric lining the waist. SO, there are a few flaws - but, the condition of this 1890's silk jacket isvery good.

Not 1890's, but 1900's. The waist is too high for the 1890's and the sleeves are more moderated that they were for most of the 1890's. Also, the pigeon is mostly 1900's as well. I'd love to see this with a black velvet skirt!
