Turn of the Century Brocade Outfit

From the seller:

Offered here is a Victorian era two-piece dress/gown that is guaranteed to be of the era; not a reproduction.

In sturdy stable condition, but not without issues.....a great piece for study, parts or restoration; makes a nice display; no big holes or tears; no large stains.

Bodice:

Waist: 21"
Shoulders, seam to seam: 13"
Bust: 30"

Skirt:

Waist: 22"
Length, down center front: 38"
Length, down cener back: 45"
Bottom sweep: 122"

Bodice is constructed of silk satin that has a woven-in floral pattern. Close fitting with tight sleeves; no shoulder puffs. Lined in polished cotton; stayed. Lace overlay on collar; center front button closure.

Skirt has seven gores (flat front; back fullness) and flounces at the hem that are accented with the same fabric as the bodice. Body of the skirt is a lighter shade of champagne than the bodice fabric. Fully lined with different cotton & stiffened fabrics; corded fabric hem protector. Center back opening; hook/eye fasteners. The fabric is just gorgeous!

Issues:
  • It appears someone had started to disassemble the bodice for possible re-styling....all the buttons have been removed as well as a few of the stays
  • Sleeve openings have both been opened slightly....I'm guessing the missing cuffs had lace overlay that matched the collar
  • Underarms are badly stained
  • Bottom edge of bodice has some of the fabric cut away all around
  • Skirt waistband at the hook/eye closure is badly worn & damaged with some poorly done repairs

  • Corded hem protector is very soiled

  • I have photographed these issues to help you make your own determination as to condition
From Me:
My guess is that this is either very late 1890's or very early 1900s based on the shape of the skirt and the bodice. I'm putting it in the early Edwardian category but it could be very late Victorian as well.
