From the seller:
An elegant original Civil War era lady's rich dove grey silk taffeta ball gown with a stunning deep ruffled silk flounce with a vibrant floral silk brocade motif, and a complimenting border at the decolletage. The lined bodice has a blind front hook and eye closure, is piped at the armscyes, and is trimmed in a pretty black French Chantilly lace at the neckline and sleeves. Piped at the directionally pleated waistband of the unlined skirt, with a deep polished cotton facing and a twill tape floor brush. Shown over a hoop skirt that is not included. A 35" bust, 27" waist and 56" from shoulder to front hem. This lovely gown is said to have originated with a family in Salem, Massachusetts. In good clean sound as found condition, with perspiration color to the armscyes, a few pin dot age flaws from normal use, a 3/4" light spot to the back of the bodice, a few spots and minor soiling at the hem, three very faint spots at the side of the skirt, and a few extremely minor scattered spots. A very beautiful circa 1864 ball gown with a Salem, Mass. provenance.
