This is a place for any extant garments in private collections from about 1941 back. There is no beginning date. The only rule is that it can't be currently in a museum and must be before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. I mostly post items I've seen on ebay, etsy, or other auction sites so we will continue to have a record of them for research purposes. If you have antique clothing in your collection, please, email me pictures of them and I will gladly add them to this site.

Poss Late 1830's Jacket
From the seller:
VINTAGE JACKET-VICTORIAN ERA-CIRCA 1837 TO 1901, JUST ONE BEAUTIFUL JACKET AND DRESS.
IT IS ALL HAND SEWN IN ANY YEAR OF ANY OF THESE DECADES; 1840,1850,1860,1870,1880,1890 AND 1900. I WISH I KNEW WHEN!
I JUST HOPE THAT THE PICTURES CAN SHOW HOW GEORGEOUS THEY BOTH ARE.
THE WAIST MEASURES 21".
LENGTH MEASURES 14" FROM THE SHOULDER TO THE BOTTOM OF THE JACKET.
THERE ARE 8 ORIGINAL BUTTONS.
EACH BUTTON HAS THE IMAGE OF A BASKET OF FLOWERS ON ITS FACE.
THERE ARE 10 PIECES OF MARKASITE ON THE OUTER EDGE OF THE FACE OF EACH BUTTON AND NONE ARE MISSING.
THERE IS A SMALL HOLE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE INSIDE VEST, BUT IT DOES NOT SHOW BECAUSE IT GETS COVERED BY THE OUTER VEST TYPE LAYER.
THERE IS A LACE SKIRT INCLUDED WITH A 22" WAIST AND IS 30" LONG.
THE SKIRT IS NOT IN AS GOOD CONDITION AS THE JACKET-SOME SMALL HOLES AND A SMALL DARK SPOT (ABOUT 3/8" DIAM).
From Me:
I think this is a theatrical costume -maybe for one of the millions of "A Christmas Carol" movies. The overall silhouette is *perfect* for 1837-1840. However, the closure and the clear sewing machine stitches makes it look far more modern. The fabric also looks a bit more 20th Century to my eyes.
